In 1995 an OECD survey revealed that one in four of the Irish population had literacy difficulties. This disturbing revelation prompted the Government to provide extra funding to address the problem. In 1998 a full-time organiser was appointed to Laois Adult Literacy Scheme and additional resources became available to expand and develop the service.
In 2002 three full-time staff were appointed and in 2003 another full-time resource worker joined the Scheme. This expansion of the service allows more adult learners to be accommodated. In 2005 five hundred and thirty-nine students enrolled with the Scheme.
