| Laois School of Music was established in September 2001 in partnership with the Arts Council, Laois County Council and Co. Laois VEC to provide quality music tuition to the people of Co. Laois. The School provides individual and group tuition across a wide range of instruments: Piano, Violin, Viola, Guitar, Cello, Flute, Recorder, Clarinet, Saxaphone and Voice. The School of Music also includes a very successful Adult Music Appreciation Course and a very strong Kindermusic programme. The School is administered on an ad-hoc basis through Laois County Council and Co. Laois VEC. It also runs an Outreach Programme into 14 Primary Schools in the County. The School has an enrolment of 300 students with 14 part-time teachers. |
The Laois Third Level Initiative has been providing national recognised undergraduate courses in Co. Laois since 2001. The Third Level Initiative was established by the Co. Laois Vocational Education Committee, Laois County Council and Laois County Enterprise Board, working in partnership to respond to the low levels of third level attainment in County Laois.
The third level courses on offer are for adult and continuing education students on a part-time basis, and provides a range of certificate, diploma and degree courses in:- Management; Business Studies; Accounting; Health and Safety; Social Care and Counselling.
These courses take place in Portarlington and are certified by a variety of educational institutions, including UCD, NUI Galway, NCI, IPA etc.
